KN95/N95/FFP2 Mask FAQs

KN95/N95/FFP2 RESPIRATOR MASKS FAQs

What is n95 mask used for?
A disposable N95 mask (respirator) is a safety device that covers the nose and mouth and helps protect the wearer from breathing in some hazardous substances. An N95 mask protects you from breathing in small particles in the air such as dust and mold.

What n95 means?
N95 Respirators. An N95 respirator is a respiratory protective device designed to achieve a very close facial fit and very efficient filtration of airborne particles. The ‘N95’ designation means that when subjected to careful testing, the respirator blocks at least 95 percent of very small (0.3 micron) test particles.

How long do n95 masks last?
The standard shelf life of N95 respirators is a maximum of five years from production date and if it has been stored in the original packaging.

Are n95 masks reusable?
One important addition to your respiratory protection plan should be reuse of N95 respirators during a shortage. The OSHA directive indicates that a respirator can be reused as long as it “maintains its structural and functional integrity and the filter material is not physically damaged or soiled.”

Do n95 masks protect against smoke?
N95 or P100 respirators can help protect your lungs from smoke or ash. Straps must go above and below the ears.

How long can you wear n95?
Respirator Extended Use Recommendations
Workers in other industries routinely use N95 respirators for several hours uninterrupted. Experience in these settings indicates that respirators can function within their design specifications for 8 hours of continuous or intermittent use.

How do I clean my n95 mask?
Clean the respirator face piece (excluding the cartridges and filters) with either a pre-packaged respirator cleaning wipe or by immersing in warm cleaning solution, water temperature not to exceed 120° F, and scrub with soft brush until clean. Add neutral detergent if necessary.

What’s the difference between n95 and p100?
The P100 protects against oily particles. The N100 does not. The difference is that now that these disposable respirators have a filtration efficiency of at least 99.9%–meaning they block out finer particles. So the “best” disposable respirator you can purchase would be a P100.

Are there different types of n95 masks?
The N95 respirator is the most common of the seven types of particulate filtering facepiece respirators. This product filters at least 95% of airborne particles but is not resistant to oil. This web page provides a table of NIOSH-approved N95 respirators, listed alphabetically by manufacturer.

Why do n95 masks expire?
Components can degrade over time
Over time, components such as the strap and nosefoam may degrade, which can affect the quality of the fit and seal. Additionally, expired respirators may potentially no longer meet the certification guidelines set by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

How many times can you wear n95 mask?
One-use masks
The masks are also frequently replaced – surgical masks are not designed to be used more than once. N95 respirators offer more protection. Such devices are designed to prevent 95 per cent of small particles from entering the nose and mouth area.

How long can you wear a disposable mask for?
eight hours
For hygiene reasons, use disposable masks and replace them when they get moist. Masks can only be worn for a maximum of eight hours and it is best to change them regularly so they can remain effective. Here are the correct ways to wear and dispose of a mask.

How often do you need to change your n95 mask?
Use of N95 respirators
Fit testing must be done prior to use, whenever a different respirator is worn, and at least annually thereafter.

What is an N95/N95/FFP2 respirator?
N95 respirator is an air-purifying respirator (APR) certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). FFP2 respirator is the (APR) certified by European CE149:2001. KN95 respirator is the (APR) certified by China GB2626-2006 KN.
They are filter masks that fit over the nose and mouth, and when properly fitted, can filter 95% of smoke particles. However, KN95/N95/FFP2 respirators do not filter toxic gases, vapors or the smell of smoke.

Can an KN95/N95/FFP2 respirator filter very small particles?
Yes, Respirators can filter particles less than 0.3 micrometers. By comparison, the width of a single human hair is approximately 60 micrometers.

What does an KN95/N95/FFP2 respirator protect against?
Respirators are designed to protect against particulate matter such as dust, fumes, mists, aerosols, and smoke particulates. It is also effective against biological particles such as pollen, mold spores, bacteria, viruses, animal dander and allergens. An N95 respirator is particularly effective against aerosolized droplets that are invisible to the naked eye.

What doesn’t an N95 respirator protect against?
A. Respirators are not effective against the smell of smoke or gases and vapors such as methane and carbon monoxide. Vapors may also include chemicals such as organic solvents and formaldehyde.

Will wearing an KN95/N95/FFP2 respirator make it hard to breathe normally?
Respirators may make breathing more difficult and lead to increased breathing and heart rates. Individuals with heart and respiratory conditions should check with their doctor before wearing an N95 respirator.

Are KN95/N95/FFP2 respirators hard to put on?
A. No, but it’s important to make sure the mask is sealed against the face. To put it on, hold the respirator in the palm of your hand with the straps facing the floor. Place the N95 respirator on the face covering the nose and mouth. Pull the bottom strap up and over top of the head, to the back of the head and below the ears. Take the upper strap and pull it up so it rests on the crown of the head. Use your hands to snug the nose piece of the respirator to the bridge of the nose and around all edges for a tight seal. Check to ensure there is a good seal against the skin.

How long can an KN95/N95/FFP2 respirator be worn?
Respirators should be worn for a maximum of eight hours and should be replaced regularly.

What is the shelf life of an KN95/N95/FFP2 respirator?
The standard shelf life of respirators is a maximum of five years from production date and if it has been stored in the original packaging. Storage conditions can also affect shelf life.
